Understanding Nigerian PAYE & Consolidated Relief Allowance (CRA)

1. How Consolidated Relief Allowance Works

Under the Personal Income Tax Act (PITA), every taxpayer receives a statutory relief known as the CRA before tax is calculated. It is defined as the higher of ₦200,000 or 1% of gross emolument, plus 20% of gross emolument.

2. Sixth Schedule Graduated Tax Bands

Once relief and pension are deducted, taxable income is taxed in 6 progressive tiers: First ₦300k (7%), Next ₦300k (11%), Next ₦500k (15%), Next ₦500k (19%), Next ₦1.6M (21%), and any amount above ₦3.2M (24%).

3. Statutory Pension Contribution

Under the Pension Reform Act 2014, employees contribute 8% of their gross monthly emolument into their Retirement Savings Account (RSA) with an approved Pension Fund Administrator (PFA), while employers contribute at least 10%.

4. Minimum Tax Guarantee

Under PITA, where taxable income produces a tax less than 1% of gross income, a minimum tax of 1% of gross income is payable, unless the worker earns at or below the national minimum wage.
