About Book Binding Spine Width & Print Margin Calculator

Commercial bookbinding spine width and margin calculator. Determines spine bulk thickness based on page count and paper caliper thickness, calculates inner gutter margin recommendations for perfect bound and hardcover books, and computes progressive creep shingling compensation for saddle-stitch booklets.

Key Capabilities & Features

  • 4 binding methods: Perfect Bound (paperback), Saddle Stitch (stapled booklet), Case Bound (hardcover), Wire-O
  • Calculates spine bulk thickness (mm and inches) based on page count and paper caliper (µm)
  • Inner gutter margin recommendations preventing text from sinking into the bound valley
  • Creep shingling compensation for thick saddle-stitch booklets
  • Paper caliper presets (70µm newsprint, 100µm standard book, 130µm coated art paper)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gutter margin in book layout?

The gutter margin is extra margin added to the inside binding edge of facing pages to prevent text and images from being swallowed into the central crease (gutter) when the book is opened.

What is booklet creep (shingling)?

In saddle-stitch booklets, inner folded sheets are pushed outward by the thickness of the preceding sheets. This progressive outward extension is called creep; trimming cuts off more of the outer margin on inside pages unless creep compensation is applied.
