Frequently Asked Questions

What is lens diffraction?

Diffraction occurs when light waves bend around the edges of a very small aperture opening (e.g. f/16 or f/22), spreading the light into an Airy disk pattern and softening overall image resolution.

Why is a 50mm f/1.4 entrance pupil smaller than a 200mm f/2.8?

Because entrance pupil diameter equals focal length divided by f-number. 50mm / 1.4 = 35.7mm, while 200mm / 2.8 = 71.4mm.
