About Elevation & Barometric Altitude Calculator
Physics-based elevation and hypsometric altitude calculator. Computes altitude from station barometric pressure and temperature using the International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) formula, water boiling point depression, geometric horizon distance, and trail slope grades.
Key Capabilities & Features
- International Standard Atmosphere (ISA) barometric hypsometry formula with temperature compensation
- Water boiling point depression calculator at altitude (e.g. 100°C at sea level down to 93°C at 2,000m)
- Geometric horizon distance calculator based on observer eye-level height ($d approx 3.57sqrt{h}$ km)
- Topographic trail slope grade calculator computing percent slope (%), angle degrees, and hypotenuse distance

Frequently Asked Questions
How does barometric pressure determine elevation?
Atmospheric pressure decreases exponentially with increasing altitude because there is less atmospheric mass above. Using standard atmospheric lapse rates, pressure directly correlates to altitude.
Why does water boil at a lower temperature at high altitude?
Boiling occurs when vapor pressure equals surrounding atmospheric pressure. Lower ambient pressure at higher altitudes allows water molecules to escape into vapor at lower temperatures.
