Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for a gear ratio?

The gear ratio is the ratio of driven gear teeth (Z2) to driver gear teeth (Z1): Gear Ratio = Z2 / Z1. For compound trains, total ratio is the product of all stage ratios: GR_total = GR1 × GR2.

Does a reduction gearbox increase horsepower?

No. Energy is conserved. A reduction gearbox reduces output speed while increasing output torque, minus a slight percentage (~2% per stage) lost to gear friction.
